How search works

Three filters, and they stack. Everything is from the last 48 hours.

1 · Place

Click a country, or zoom in and click a city. A city is always searched together with its country, so Tripoli means Tripoli in Libya and not Tripoli in Lebanon. You can also type a place in the search box — countries and cities both.

2 · Topic

A topic widens the net with a group of related words — Business looks for business, economy, markets or trade, and any one of them counts. All applies no topic at all.

3 · Keyword

Free text, added on top of the other two. With France selected and strike typed, a story has to match both.

Because all three must match at once, a specific keyword on a small place can come back with nothing. That is a real answer, not a failure — you will get the option to drop the keyword.

What the search cannot do

Words are matched anywhere in a story, including the name of the publication and the byline. So a place name can match a publisher instead of the subject: France catches anything bylined Agence France-Presse or run by France 24, even when the story itself is about Sudan. There is no way to ask for a word in the subject only.

Names that mean something else are pinned by hand — Georgia searches Georgia Tbilisi, Chad searches Chad N'Djamena. Smaller cities are less distinctive, so their results drift toward classifieds and job posts.

Read the panel as a wire feed for a place, not a verified index of it.
